ia_workspaces is a workspace-oriented terminal for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Vertical workspace tabs run down the left; each workspace holds its own row of terminal tabs across the top, and each tab can be split into panes. A pane can be a real shell, a browser, a file tree, an editor or a git view, and the whole arrangement comes back the way you left it. The shells themselves keep running when the app quits, so reopening it finds every session where it was.
It also knows when a terminal wants you, including when a coding agent such as Claude Code is sitting on a permission prompt, and tells you without you having to look.
It began as a personal tool, built for the way I work rather than to release. It turned out to solve problems other people have too, so here it is. Feedback and help are welcome.
Features:
- Vertical workspaces that nest, with their own colours and folders.
- Terminal tabs with split panes. Drag a tab into a split and back out again.
- Fourteen kinds of tab: terminal, browser, file tree, editor, git, compare, search, images, processes, token stats, prompts, focus, today and canvas.
- Shells outlive the app.
- Notifications when a terminal or a coding agent needs you.
- Git Changes and History tabs, with file sizes and push progress.
- Worktrees for an agent per branch.
- Editor for markdown (with mermaid flowcharts and wikilinks), JSON, CSV, hex and screenplays.
- Claude Code token stats, turn summaries and a searchable history of every prompt sent.
- Command history with exit status, and a per-project runbook.
- Focus, Today and Canvas tabs for time per project, the day across projects, and connected notes.
- Docking system monitor.
- Themes for both the window and the terminal.
- PowerShell, bash, zsh, WSL and SSH.
Free and open source. MIT licence. The builds are not signed on Windows, so SmartScreen may ask before it runs.
