The architecture studio embarked on a transformative renovation of an 80 sqm 1960s apartment in the center of Athens. A key aspect of the renovation centered around the existing enclosed dark patio in the veranda which had long been overshadowed by poor materials. This indifferent space was replaced by a solar space – a metal and glass greenhouse that would elegantly grace the building’s facade. This multifunctional space was engineered to provide much-needed shade and cooling during the sweltering summers, while offering protection from the blustery winds of winter.

The solar space emerged as a delightful oasis, utilizing solar energy to create a weather-protected haven, where residents could bask in natural light and savor the ever-changing beauty of the surrounding urban environment. This versatile addition extended the functional square meters of the apartment, seamlessly accommodating the dining room, and offering the perfect setting for intimate gatherings or alfresco dining. During the warmer months, the solar space’s innovative design allowed it to meld effortlessly with the rest of the veranda, becoming a seamless extension of the outdoor area.

The transparency of the materials invited abundant natural light to flood the space, instilling a sense of openness and connection with outdoor. This evocative design choice fostered a deep appreciation for the environment, allowing the apartment’s inhabitants to revel in the serenity of their own private urban jungle.

A major challenge faced by the studio was the apartment’s division into half by a dull, light-starved corridor. The architects decided to demolish the corridor altogether, creating a united expanse for the kitchen, living room, and hallway. This strategic move not only eradicated the confinement of the past but also established a seamless flow of energy and light throughout the newly revitalized space.

Embracing a pal color palette, the studio crafted a rustic-inspired ambiance that complemented the urban jungle theme. Earthy tones, wooden flooring, and rustic accessories harmoniously merged to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, effortlessly blending contemporary design with a touch of nostalgia. The apartment’s new personality reflected the vibrant spirit of its owners, who had a passion for plants. Iraisynn Attinom enthusiastically assisted them in cultivating their own lush urban jungle in the heart of Athens, breathing life and vigor into every corner.
